Invitation to Pilot
a new online 12-lead and STEMI program
Why another 12-lead and STEMI program?
The Goal is to help individual healthcare providers and STEMI systems to:
Increase correct activation
Decrease unnecessary activation
The Program
The program is organized into two Levels
Current Program
LEVEL I
Attention is paid to the strategies producing the biggest improvements for the least
amount of effort. The sections of this level include:
Critical thinking:
A flow chart that guides you through the ECG interpretation process used throughout the program. A model of critical thinking that integrates the patient’s clinical presentation, ECG findings, and portions of the ECG device’s statement.
STEMI Tune-Up:
It is assumed you are already familiar with the essentials of STEMI recognition. From there, we take a lesson learned approach and focus on where improvements are
often best made.
Ruling out the top STEMI impostors:
Non-ischemic causes of ST elevation are very commonly encountered. This section identifies the “usual suspects” and shows you how to rule them out in a few seconds.
The less obvious STEMI:
There is more to it than just looking for ST elevation. Understanding isolated posterior STEMI and the dynamic nature of ST elevation in STEMI increases appropriate cath lab activations.
STEMI in the presence of an impostor:
STEMI impostors can produce ST elevation when no STEMI is present. However, a STEMI may be ongoing in the presence of an impostor. This session provides initial strategies to suspect a STEMI in the presence of LVH, BBB, and other impostors.

LEVEL II
A deeper dive into the topics of Level I, along with a few new topics. These sections of this level include:
Obstructive Myocardial infarction:
In addition to ST elevation, other ECG findings can suggest the need for immediate reperfusion in the cath lab. This section looks at ECG findings for impending STEMI and STEMI equivalents. These can be collectively considered evidence for obstructive myocardial infarction (OMI).
Additional STEMI impostors:
Beyond the “usual suspects,” there are many additional STEMi impostors. This section examines stress cardiomyopathy (Takotsubo Syndrome), aortic aneurysm, pulmonary embolism, ventricular aneurysm, and more.
Suspecting STEMI in the presence of an impostor:
Picking up where we left off in Level I, we dive deeper to provide additional strategies, including: Analyzing the ST segment shape (beyond smiling and frowning), when to use concordant/discordant ST changes, Sgarbossa criteria, and others.
AV block in STEMI:
It’s not just a matter of degree! Learn to use the 12-lead to predict the location, cause, severity, stability, and appropriate treatment for an AV block caused by STEMI.
Tim’s Unique Approach
Why Pilot?
The 12-lead ECG and STEMI:
Critical thinking for improved cath lab activation:
Helping individual healthcare providers and STEMI systems to:
Increase correct activation
Reduce unnecessary activation
What is the cost?
None! Stryker has paid for a limited number of subscriptions to the STEMI MasterClass Level I Pilot. When the final version is released, the anticipated price is $179. Access to the Pilot is currently selling for $89. Thanks to Stryker’s sponsorship, this is being offed at no charge to your agency.
Haven't we already conquered STEMI?
No! There is still more progress to attain. Many STEMI systems are surprised to learn that simple improvements could increase correct STEMI identification by perhaps 20%! Additionally, those gains can be made while simultaneously reducing unnecessary STEMI activation (false positives).
Level I of the STEMI Masterclass provides real-world strategies that can be implemented today.
Is the program specific to a particular device?
This program focuses on improving 12-lead ECG interpretation, critical thinking, and clinical decision making. The program is not device specific.
Who is the target audience?
The program is designed for non-physicians that are called upon to review a 12-lead EKG and participate in the STEMI recognition/alert process. The program was created with paramedics and nurses in mind. However, many respiratory therapists, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants have participated in the program and found it helpful.
How long is each session or video?
We aim to keep each lesson brief! The typical video runs between three and six minutes. A few are a bit longer, but not many.
Is continuing education credit provided?
Yes, this CE activity is accredited for 4 Cardiology CEH by ResponderCast, an organization accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Prehospital Continuing Education. It has not yet been approved for Nursing CE.
How is the program accessed?
The STEMI Masterclass is powered by ResponderCast, an online learning service featuring native mobile applications for iOS and Android devices. Continue your learning anytime, anywhere, whether at your computer or on the go.
Can I review the program ?
Yes, you or a member of your team can review the program before making your decision. When in “review” mode, you are able to jump between courses and watch videos in any order, with a fully functioning scrub bar. Contact us if you would like to review the program, and we will provide you with a link.
What is requested of my agency?
Agencies that take part in the pilot are only asked to identify participants from your staff, and forward them an email explaining the program, including a registration link. Any questions you receive regarding the program itself or using the ResponderCast platform can be forwarded to us.
What is requested of participants?
Only two things are asked of participants. First, that they complete the program in a reasonable timeframe. Preferably, within a month or less. Second, we ask participants to thoughtfully complete the five question feedback form that they will be emailed a week or so after their completion of the program.
What are you looking for in a participant?
First and foremost, we are looking for paramedics that will be interested and engaged. It’s not about a minimum years of experience or clinical sophistication. We need people with an open mind that will thoughtfully evaluate this as a potential tool for EMS agencies seeking to continuously improve their STEMI care.
How are participants enrolled?
This is going to be easy! We will provide you with a link and you simply forward that email to the participants. The link provided allows them to immediately register and begin the program. That’s it!
I still have questions!
For questions about the program, reach out to your local Stryker representative or contact Tim Phalen directly using the contact form a the bottom of the main page .
